Chapter 31

A couple of days later, Tavi was hanging out with Malik and Pablo in their encampment when he saw a group of children come in with two new ones. It was easy to spot the children who were just arriving. They often stopped and stared in astonishment at the huge area which looked like a miniature village filled with only children.

What had caught Tavi’s attention, though, were the children who were leading the group. Or, to be more specific, one child in general. “Is that…?” Tavi asked, pointing at the approaching children.

“Yep,” Pablo replied. “That’s Momo.”

“Really? I thought he didn’t want to have anything to do with bringing kids here.”

Malik explained, “I was here when it happened last week. Derek and Momo got into a huge argument because Momo wouldn’t go to the bars with him that night. After Derek accused him of being a frightened girl and threatened to leave their camp, Momo agreed to go. I think this is the third one he’s been on since then. He brought back two children last time as well.”

Tavi listened to Malik in disbelief. He hopped up with a smile spread across his face and strode over to where Momo was talking to Derek.

Momo glanced around to see who was approaching, and when he saw Tavi’s smile, his eyes lit up for a second.

“Hi, Momo,” Tavi said.

“Tavi.” His eyes danced with delight but his face remained as serious as ever.

“So, what have you been up to lately?”

And for a brief second, Momo’s stern visage broke into a boyish grin. “Don’t say a word,” he warned. Tavi and Derek both laughed as Momo’s face became serious again.

“I won’t,” Tavi promised. “I just wanted to say…” He grinned and patted Momo on the shoulder and then turned and walked away.

When he got back to camp, he saw Kurt and Pablo digging through a box, with several other boxes at their feet. “What are you guys doing?” he asked as he sat down next to Malik, who had a notepad and pencil ready to take notes.

They each pulled out several cell phones and sorted them into two separate piles. “Taking inventory,” Kyle said, without stopping from what they were doing.

Tavi pulled one of the boxes closer to him and found it filled with watches, necklaces, and portable gaming systems. He whistled in surprise. “Whose stuff is this?”

“It’s ours,” Pablo replied.

“Ours?”

“Our group’s stuff. Ben’s. Malik’s. Adam’s. And a bunch of other people.”

“Why aren’t we selling it? I thought that was the whole point.”

Pablo looked up in exasperation. “Because there are too many of us trying to sell stuff right now. We all agreed to split the money when we sell stuff, but it’s not working very well.”

“Hmmm. Well, good luck doing inventory. I’m going over to Jack’s camp.”

Kyle stopped counting and looked up as well. “So you’re not going to help us?”

Tavi grinned. “I have an idea!”

“I hate it when you say that,” Pablo grumbled. He counted the piles of phones in front of him.
